Our Community Partners 1991-present
The Healing Art of Music™ program, which began in 1991, has raised more than $2,800,000 for over fifty worthy causes and has been nationally recognized with the League of American Orchestras' MetLife Award for Excellence in Community Engagement and the highest cultural recognition in Massachusetts, the Commonwealth Award. LSO is proud to have supported the following organizations over the program's history, including those featured on our current 2024-25 season.
2025-26 Partners
October 25, 2025: project step
Since 1982, Project STEP (String Training Education Program) has provided talented young musicians that identify with historically underrepresented groups in classical music with comprehensive music instruction. Project STEP envisions a world in which the classical music profession reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of our communities. 100% of Project STEP graduates have gone on to college or conservatory.
DECEMBER 6, 2025: tunefoolery music
2025 marks Tunefoolery Music’s thirty-first year of connecting music with mental health. Founded at a drop-in center in Cambridge, MA, for individuals with psychiatric disabilities, Tunefoolery began as a group of four musicians who performed 15 concerts for family, friends, and peers in their first year. Today, as a Boston-based nonprofit supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the MA Dept. of Mental Health, Tunefoolery has grown to 25 active musicians (age 25-77!) who play a variety of instruments and musical genres and benefit from the organization’s performance opportunities, music education programs, and supportive community. This past year, we performed over 700 gigs at hospitals, shelters, mental health centers, and nursing homes, providing music to audiences that typically lack access to live performances. We have increased the diversity of our membership and continued to give back to mental health units where some of our members were once patients. As we celebrate over 30 years, we are proud to be member-led for the first time and are honored to be one of LSO’s Community Partners.
